Boston is and was a vibrant jazz hub in the twentieth century. South End was the place where it was always happening. LaGrange was called the combat zone because of the sex workers and seedy strip clubs that were located there. The neighborhood of Chinatown exploded with adult stores, porn theaters and peep shows back then and it spilled over into the rest of the Chinatown location. Most of the businesses were shut down eventually by the Boston Redevelopment Authority after a couple of Harvard students got robbed and wounded outside of the Naked I Lounge, which was a hot Hookup Bar and Club that was very popular. It was when several Vietnamese relocated to Chinatown and began opening businesses inside the Combat Zone. They opened up stores and even hotels, improving the area.

The Vietnamese fought in the war and were tough enough to enter the Combat Zone. They made the place good enough for the locals to feel comfortable. They even opened up several stores where locals could rent VHS and watch in the comfort of their own home rather than visit a porn theater. They opened two strip clubs known as the Glass Slipper and Centerfolds, which were not obtrusive to the community, but added class and sophistication to the area. In the 1980s, the Narcissus Club opened its door, but only lasted for ten years. The Narcissus Club was also known as the Kenmore Club as well as Lipstick and Celebration Club. When you went there, it would always have a large crowd, especially on weekends. The club was large enough to have three floors. Boston locals loved the Rat Club, which opened up in the early 1970s and closed its doors in the late 1990s. Many local musicians showcased their talent at the Rat Club with live band performances. In the late 1960s, one of the psychedelic clubs was known as the Ark with many rock bands performing. It was located on 15 Landsdowne Street where locals would go to bar hop or club hop for fun and entertainment.
