In the city of San Diego, there is a history of past entertainment that mirrors some of what we see today in the same city. In 1939, the Aloha Bar opened its doors with the name Aloha Cafe. A year before, the Anchor Cafe owned by the same person was burned to the ground. So, Frank opened up this new dig. Frank was born in California, but lived above San Diego's border at the time. He was very interested in boxing and so that was part of what you would go to see at the Aloha Cafe. Frank would also promote other forms of entertainment to the locals, challenging them to come and experience the hula hoop trills and more. Many people thought that this was an Hawaiian tequila bar. You wouldn't see rum on the cocktail menu.
When the Anchor Cafe and other establishments burned down on Main Street, many people lost their jobs and even the employees that worked at the Anchor Cafe were devastated. That may be one of the reasons that Frank decided to open up something similar so his employees could be working again. People were happy to see it open too because then there was a place to hang out at night for the chance to land a San Diego hook up. It was not until 1940 and beyond that Aloha Bar promoted the idea of selling tequila drinks and offering live entertainment to patrons. Locals came to expect the live floor shows that occurred every thirty minutes. The bar also had a group of regular dancers who were quite entertaining. They performed burlesque strip teases, folklore Mexican dances and more. There are several rock banks that came by to perform for the crowd. Unfortunately, Aloha Bar closed its door in the 1970s when it became a disco club with different ownership and in the 1980s; it was transformed into a strip club along with other entertainment establishments like Club Bambi and the Long Bar. Today, its boarded up and on the market for sale.
In 1935, the Tropic Cafe was one of the first nightclubs in San Diego with a 'pre-tiki' theme. Originally, it was opened in a building located on 11th and Market Street by owner, John Ewing. The Tropic Cafe was opened to serve the military people in San Diego. For two years, he enjoyed good business and had to even move the building to a bigger space. John Ewing also opened up the Tropic Village Room in 1939, which offered moonlight dining and even dancing and background music. The bar was shaped like a freighter and served rum drinks with a tropical theme. The Tropic Cafe was sold in 1946 because Jack Ewing had decided to join World War II for active duty. Later on, the place switched owners and was re-opened 'Hula Hut.' Next door to the 'Hula Hut,' you would find the Cuckoo Club and the Aloha Club came later on.
In 1938, Puka-Puka was opened as a rum bar, high end and entertaining. It ran its course until 1970, which was a long period in the sense that there were many that came and went during that time. You could expect beers, bar food and mixed drinks on the menu. This would have been one of the ideal San Diego Hookup Bar, if you were around during those times.
